Booking Tips

  • Book 3-4 months in advance for peak season travel to ensure availability
  • If you want to see the tree-climbing lions, make sure to book a tour that specifically includes the Ishasha sector
  • Consider a multi-day tour to experience the park's different regions without feeling rushed
  • Read recent reviews to get insights on current animal sightings and guide performance
  • Combine a game drive and a boat cruise in a single day tour for the most comprehensive experience.

What to Bring

  • Valid Passport & Ugandan Visa
  • Binoculars (essential for good viewing)
  • Camera with zoom lens and extra batteries
  • High-SPF sunscreen & lip balm
  • Strong insect repellent containing DEET
  • Wide-brimmed sun hat & sunglasses
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket or poncho
  • Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Small amount of Ugandan Shillings for tips and local crafts

Best Seasons to Visit

The prime game viewing months are during the dry seasons: January to February and June to September. During this time, vegetation is sparse and animals gather at water sources, making them easier to spot. The wet seasons (March to May, October to December) offer lush, green landscapes, fewer tourists, and are exceptional for birdwatching.

What to Wear

Wear neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, beige) to blend in with the environment|Pack lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against sun and insects|Bring a warm fleece or jacket for chilly early mornings and evenings|Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes are essential|A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are crucial for sun protection.

Planning

Historical Context

Originally established as Kazinga National Park in 1952, the park was renamed two years later to commemorate a visit by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. The park has endured and recovered from periods of intense poaching during Uganda's turbulent past, standing today as a major conservation success story. The landscape itself tells a much older story, with the 72 explosion craters in the northern sector bearing witness to violent volcanic activity from millennia ago.

Photography Tips

  • A zoom lens (at least 200-400mm) is essential for getting frame-filling shots of wildlife from a safe distance
  • Use a beanbag rested on the vehicle's window frame or roof for stability – it's often better than a tripod in a car
  • Shoot in aperture priority mode to control depth of field and blur the background on animal portraits
  • Use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster) to avoid motion blur, both from the animal and the vehicle
  • Don't forget to capture the vast, beautiful landscapes, not just the animals. Use a wide-angle lens for the crater lakes and savannah.

Insider Tips

  • Ask your guide to teach you a few words in the local language; a simple 'thank you' (webale) goes a long way
  • Don't just fixate on lions; the park has incredible birdlife, and the guides are fantastic at pointing out rare species
  • If your tour passes the Equator line marker, ask for a quick stop for the classic photo opportunity
  • Keep your camera ready at all times; you never know when an animal will appear on the side of the road
  • Bring a portable power bank to keep your phone and camera charged throughout the long day.

The Kazinga Channel is Unbelievable

We booked a full-day tour that included the boat cruise. I have never seen so many hippos in one place in my entire life. Our guide, Robert, was fantastic and could spot an eagle from a mile away. The vehicle was comfortable, and booking through the platform was easy. Worth every penny.

We Saw the Tree-Climbing Lions!

My dream was to see the lions in the trees at Ishasha, and our guide delivered! It took patience, but he found a pride of five resting in a huge fig tree. It was magical. The southern part of the park feels so wild and remote. A truly authentic safari experience. Highly recommend a tour that specifically includes Ishasha.

Beautiful Park, Lots of Animals

A very beautiful park with stunning landscapes, especially the crater lakes. We saw many elephants, buffalo, and antelope. The boat trip was a highlight. We did not see a leopard, which was a small disappointment, but that is the nature of wildlife. The guide was knowledgeable and the tour was well-organized.

An Unforgettable Family Adventure

We took our two teenage kids, and they were absolutely captivated. The guide was wonderful with them, answering all their questions. The combination of the game drive and the boat cruise kept things exciting. Seeing the elephants cross the road right in front of our vehicle was a moment we'll never forget. Booking was simple, and everything went smoothly.

Superb Birding and Scenery

I came primarily for the birdwatching, and Queen Elizabeth Park did not disappoint. My guide was an expert birder and helped me identify dozens of new species. The sheer diversity is incredible. Even beyond the birds, the landscapes are breathtaking. The boat cruise offered fantastic views of water birds. A first-class nature experience.

A Great Introduction to Ugandan Safaris

This was our first safari in Uganda, and it was a fantastic introduction. The park is very accessible and the wildlife is abundant. Our lodge was near the Mweya peninsula, and the views were spectacular. The roads can be bumpy, so be prepared for a 'free African massage' as the guides say! A great trip overall.

Exceeded All Expectations

From the seamless booking process to the final drop-off, this was a 5-star experience. Our guide, Joseph, was the key – his passion for the wildlife and his country was infectious. We felt safe, informed, and incredibly lucky to witness such a thriving ecosystem. The highlight was a leopard sighting at dusk. Absolutely incredible.

Wonderful but hot!

The wildlife viewing was excellent, especially on the Kazinga channel cruise. We saw so many animals up close. It was very hot in February, so be sure to bring lots of water, a hat, and sunscreen. The vehicle had an open top which was great for photos but offered little shade. A fantastic tour, just be prepared for the heat.
